Toward Understanding God’s Power of Prophecy

Seeing the gift of prophecy in a new light.

We tend to think about prophecy as “speaking truth to power,” but social criticism isn’t all that God cares about. In a

Center for Action and Contemplation meditation

, Mike Petrow pointed out the incompleteness of that notion. In his words, “Prophecy is speaking truth to power

on behalf of a divine vision of wholeness.

           ”

Yes, the prophets in Hebrew Scripture rant against Israel’s shortcomings (as Hosea does

           here

). God grieves over the people’s lack of “faithfulness or loyalty.” God is angry that Israel’s leaders have pursued other gods and don’t care for the people they are supposed to lead and guide. Speaking truth to power is a valuable element of the gift of prophecy.

God also acts through the prophets as a means to communicate God’s vision for a world that we, in our frailty and sin-blindedness, cannot imagine on our own. They share enticing promises of a future filled with healing, safety, and plenty (as Isaiah does

           here

). This divine vision of wholeness is both individual and communal. Feeble knees are made firm, and the eyes of the blind are “opened.” People travel safely upon a highway called the “Holy Way.” Water will flow in the desert.

This all reminds me of a question I once asked in a past conversation: “Is it finally time for you to stop running away from this call?” It shocked both myself and the person to whom I was speaking. But this unexpected inquiry prompted deeper conversation that revealed a clear invitation from Spirit for this individual to embrace an opportunity for further training in leadership. For me, this felt like a moment of prophecy.

But how? Since we are colleagues, I didn’t feel as though I was speaking truth to someone more powerful than I am. Instead, I believe that Spirit spoke through me to someone who has power they are not using. God used my mouth to open their eyes to see more about how they fit into God’s vision of wholeness.

As I noted above, prophecy has both individual and communal components. Evidently, the Spirit wants this person to use their God-given gifts and situational opportunities more fully. This person has some (spiritual) power. Perhaps there will be opportunities to use this new training in ways that none of us can yet envision.

Many times, we believe we aren’t good or righteous enough to be used by God. I beg to disagree. God can, and will, use every one of us. Sometimes the Holy Spirit even takes over our mouths and uses them in ways we could not have imagined.

Many times, we think we don’t have the right platform or connections or enough chutzpah to speak truth to power. But we don’t all need to be preaching to those at the top of the political food chain. Instead, God might be calling us to share invitations to those we know and love who aren’t fully using their gifts “

on behalf of a divine vision of wholeness.

           ”

When has the Spirit used you in some prophetic way? How might you view some incident in your life differently if you ponder it through this prophetic lens?

Along with our host, Cathy Tyndall Boyd, Christina will explore liturgy, creativity, Reiki, and the ways sacred beauty sustains us, especially in the often unseen spaces clergy spouses inhabit.

Christina’s relationship with the sacred extends beyond sound and fabric into energy and space. Raised in the woods of Maine, she developed an early awareness of the Divine Presence in all living things. By age 18, she had already studied multiple healing modalities and later trained in Reiki with Sandra Snell, DVM, working with humans and animals alike. Over time, her work evolved toward the energy of living spaces, leading her into space clearing, feng shui, and global understandings of place and presence. She delights in helping people recognize the energy of their homes and sacred spaces that connect to the desires of their hearts.

In regards to her liturgical fabric work, Christina combines the finest materials with over 30 years of craftsmanship to create vestments, linens, and paraments that honor and expand tradition through the innovative use of color and design. Each piece is a one-of-a-kind celebration of the Divine Spirit alive in a particular place, translating the identity of a church into a beautiful object that can be seen and felt.

The Path to A Healthier You

Every new year arrives with a familiar invitation: set goals, start fresh, do better. We write lists, make plans, and promise ourselves that this will be the year things finally change. And yet, for most of us, those goals don’t make it past the first few weeks of January. Not because we lack discipline or desire, but because many of the goals we set don’t actually match what we truly need.

What if this year we tried something different?

Instead of striving for idealized versions of health or productivity, what if we set goals that tend to our

           whole selves,

not just physically, but mentally, spiritually, emotionally, and in every place where life feels heavy or thin? Health is not one-dimensional, and neither are we.

For some of us, meaningful goals may look like finally making time for ourselves. Time to rest. Time to breathe. Time to remember who we are beyond what we give to others. Because the truth is, caring for everyone else while neglecting ourselves is not sustainable. We are no less worthy of care simply because we are capable of carrying a lot.

For others, this season might invite a different kind of courage, the courage to step toward community. To take small but intentional leaps that help build the connection and support we deeply need. Ironically, it’s often when we feel the strongest pull to withdraw that we most need to be around others who understand.

And sometimes, goals around health touch our faith journeys as well. They may look like taking steps forward together as a family, finding rhythms of faith that feel honest and life-giving. Or they may look like stepping back for reflection, naming what you need spiritually outside of your partner’s role or calling. Both are valid. Both are worthy of care.

Whatever this season looks like for you, you don’t have to navigate it alone. We are here to reflect with you, to hold space that is safe and supportive, and to offer encouragement that lasts longer than the first month of the year. Because sometimes, all it takes is a little extra support, and a few companions on the path to find the motivation that truly carries us forward.

And when we do it together, it counts!

Boundaries as a Pathway to Peace

The holiday season often arrives with good intentions and full calendars. For clergy spouses, it can also arrive with heightened visibility, increased demands, and the quiet pressure to hold everything together; home, church, family, and self, without letting anything drop.

In the midst of it all, one of the most loving and faithful things you can do this season is to protect your peace.

Boundaries are not barriers. They are invitations to live honestly within your limits. They help you remain present to what truly matters, rather than stretched thin by everything that asks for your attention.

           When Peace Slowly Slips Away

Peace is rarely lost all at once. More often, it’s given away in small moments, another yes when you’re already tired, another conversation that leaves you emotionally depleted, another tradition you maintain out of obligation rather than joy.

As clergy spouses, it can feel especially difficult to step back. Ministry needs do not pause for the holidays. Expectations, spoken and unspoken, can feel endless. You may feel responsible not only for your own family’s experience of the season, but also for the emotional and spiritual tone of the community around you.

           And yet, your peace matters.

           Gentle questions to consider:

When was the last time I felt truly rested, not just “caught up”?

What situations or interactions consistently leave me feeling drained or resentful?

Where am I saying yes out of guilt, fear, or habit rather than calling or capacity?

What would it look like to honor my limits without apologizing for them?

These questions are not meant to judge, but to illuminate. Awareness is often the first step toward peace.

What Boundaries Can Look Like This Season

Protecting your peace does not require drastic changes. Often, it begins with small, intentional choices.

           This might mean:

Saying no to one more event

so you can say yes to rest, quiet, or time with those who restore you.

            Limiting conversations

that consistently drain you emotionally or pull you into conflict or comparison.

            Letting go of traditions

that no longer serve your family in this season of life, even if they once held meaning.

            Choosing presence over perfection

, allowing things to be simpler, messier, and more human.

Boundaries are not about withdrawal. They are about stewardship. They help you care for the life you’ve been given so that you can show up with honesty and compassion, rather than depletion.

Protecting Peace in the Midst of Ministry

For clergy spouses, peace can feel elusive because ministry often blurs the lines between personal and public life. The holidays can intensify this blur.

           Protecting your peace may involve:

Naming, with your spouse, what is realistic for your household during this season.

Deciding ahead of time what you will and will not engage in emotionally.

Creating small rituals of grounding; morning quiet, a walk, a deep breath before gatherings.

Giving yourself permission to be fully human, not endlessly available.

Protecting your peace is not selfish. It is necessary. When your well is tended, you are better able to show up with authenticity, kindness, and resilience.

           An Invitation to Choose Peace

This season, may you remember that your peace is not an afterthought, it is foundational! You are allowed to guard it. You are allowed to rest. You are allowed to live within the truth of your limits.

Boundaries are not a failure of love; they are often how love endures.

May this holiday season offer you moments of deep breath, honest presence, and peace that feels both protected and shared.

Finding Joy This Holiday Season: Guarding What Matters Most

           Finding JOY this Holiday Season

Finding Joy This Holiday Season: Guarding What Matters Most

The holidays arrive with a chorus of expectations. Joy should be loud. Gratitude should be constant. Togetherness should be effortless. And yet, for many clergy spouses, the season feels layered, beautiful and burdensome all at once.

Joy during the holidays does not always arrive wrapped in lights and laughter. Sometimes it comes quietly, asking to be noticed rather than performed. Finding joy this season may look less like adding more and more like choosing wisely what you will carry.

Joy Is Not the Absence of Difficulty

It’s important to name this truth: joy does not mean everything feels good. Joy can coexist with grief, exhaustion, disappointment, or longing. You may feel deep love for the season and still feel worn down by it. You may be surrounded by people and still feel lonely. None of this disqualifies you from joy.

Joy, in its truest form, is not about pretending everything is fine, it’s about recognizing what sustains you even when things are not.

           Small Joys Matter

Joy does not need to be grand to be meaningful. Often, it is found in the smallest moments:

A quiet cup of coffee before the day begins

A familiar song that settles your spirit

Laughter that catches you by surprise

A moment of stillness when the world feels loud

Give yourself permission to notice these moments without guilt. They are not distractions from responsibility; they are reminders that you are human and worthy of care.

You Don’t Have to Hold It All Alone

Whether this season feels warm or heavy, joyful or strained, we encourage you to share it with someone you trust. Share your joy—it has a way of multiplying when it is spoken aloud. Share your struggle! It has a way of softening when it is held by another.

At The Partner’s Path, we believe that joy grows best in community and that peace is often protected together, not alone.

As you move through this holiday season, may you find the courage to honor your limits, the grace to release what is not yours to carry, and the gentleness to welcome joy in whatever form it arrives.

You are allowed to choose peace. And in doing so, you may just discover joy waiting for you there.

We are children of abundance, but we can indeed forget it. Our spiritual ancestors endured the abuse of slavery in Egypt, yet they longed to return there when their bellies were empty in the wilderness (see

While most of us are not facing literal hunger, we struggle to accept life in the wilderness of America today. We long to find evidence of compassion and justice around us. We can fill our tables with food at Thanksgiving, but we struggle to find the kindness and empathy to feed our souls.

It was in a similarly paradoxical setting—one of material abundance and spiritual hunger—that God came to us in Jesus. Hope was scarce in occupied Galilee, and compassion even more so. Yet Jesus fed the five thousand and helped them learn to trust in God’s ongoing care and providence.

Listening to our Bodies during Lent

Read how one member of the community intends to spend the Lenten season.

This Lent, I am committing to spending time away from electronic devices and more time in meditation. My body is telling me that some form of meditation, whether it be a seated meditation or a walking meditation, is what is needed to bring things in my body and mind into a more peaceful state.

How do I know this is what I need? Well, after years of practicing yoga and meditation I have become aware of when my body doesn't feel as settled or as calm as it can be. There's a little more energy pulsing inside of me when all I want to feel is peace. Things like too much time spent on devices, and not enough time spent in nature or at least gazing at nature from a window contribute to this ever so slightly agitated state. So this Lent , I am challenging myself in a gentle way to make my way back to a more peaceful state.

I invite you to listen a little more deeply to your body this Lent and see what it may be trying to tell you. As clergy partners, it is essential to take care of ourselves. Why not let this season of Lent be the one in which we listen a little more to our bodies and act with the knowledge we get from that listening.

May your Lent be filled with listening and peaceful moments.

If you want to grow in your faith journey and spiritual life, you might consider getting a spiritual director. Spiritual directors are dedicated to guiding people in the spiritual journey, and helping them explore matters of the soul, faith, and God. Spiritual direction is a practice found in many faith traditions.

For anyone actively seeking and traveling the spiritual journey, here are 10 reasons to get a spiritual director.

           1. Explore and interpret your experiences of God.

You may have experiences and encounters with God that you want to process and sort through. In relationship with a spiritual director, you are free to talk about your experiences of God without judgement or criticism. As questions or tensions arise, your spiritual director will listen and prayerfully help you make sense of those experiences.

           2. Integrate spirituality and practices in your daily life.

We can make space for spiritual formation through practices like sabbath, prayer, self-care, meditation, retreat, reflection, and creative expression. If you’re seeking to cultivate spiritual practices in your life, a spiritual director can help you. Your spiritual director will guide you in taking practical steps to integrate spirituality in your day-to-day living.

           3. Deepen your relationship with God.

A spiritual director understands that the most important relationship in your life is the one you have with God. The primary intent of a spiritual director is to guide you in having a deepening intimacy with God. Together with your spiritual director, you will explore God’s presence, voice, and activity in your life. Through prayer, conversation, listening, and asking questions, your spiritual director can help you respond to God and take steps to further your relationship with him.

           4. Make important decisions or changes.

We all have moments or seasons of needing to make significant decisions. Big decisions are opportunities to consider our options, values, and desires. Your spiritual director will work alongside you to discern and evaluate decisions, and move forward with wisdom.

           5. Discover your purpose and calling in life.

Have you wondered if you’re living out your true purpose and calling? When we find our unique purpose in life, our identity intersects with our mission, and we experience profound contentment and joy. A spiritual director will help you explore and make space for your passions, talents, and God-given calling.

           6. Share joys, fears, desires, and struggles in a safe environment.

There is a significant human experience that occurs when we can name our deepest desires and struggles in the presence of another person. Our soul has space to be seen and heard. In relationship with a spiritual director, you will have a safe place to share your innermost thoughts and feelings. Your spiritual director will listen and ask questions, not to judge or problem solve, but to be present with you in your experiences.

           7. Spiritually heal from past wounds and hurts.

There may be wounds from your past that continue to have a negative effect on you. Some wounds have spiritual roots, and therefore need spiritual remedies. A spiritual director can guide you into experiences with God of forgiveness, confession, and inner healing.

           8. Receive the encouragement, guidance, and companionship you need.

In any area of life that we want to mature and grow, we need mentors and coaches who support us. Someone who is a few steps ahead can give us the wisdom and guidance we need. Your spiritual director will encourage, support, and give you companionship in your pursuit of spiritual growth.

           9. Get spiritually unstuck.

You might desire to grow spiritually, but feel like you’re stuck and unable to move ahead. Inner barriers and external circumstances may be getting in the way of your growth. A spiritual director can help identify the reasons for your “spiritual plateau,” and offer solutions and tools to get you into a place of moving forward in your spiritual journey.

           10. Become who you were designed to be.

Imagine a life of contentment, freedom, and joy. Imagine your body, mind, and spirit being integrated with the Divine Being who created you. Imagine discovering your purpose, having a clearer sense of the meaning of life, and developing more love for God and others. A spiritual director will guide you into these experiences with God, allowing you become the person you were designed to be.

Getting a spiritual director can be a significant investment in your spiritual growth and relationship with God.
